MARCH 2017

Dear Friends -

In March we celebrate International Women's Day. If she were still alive, Loretta Dranoff, the woman who founded our organization, could serve as an ambassador for this celebration. Her passion and her inner light ignited so many people's lives!

A musician, a wife, a mother, a mentor, a friend, a teacher, she understood the role of music in building community both inside and outside of the cultural arts. She worked with others in introducing musical instruments into public schools. She created the Dranoff International 2 Piano Competition, one of the world's most rigorous and respected competitions for two piano chamber music. She helped forge career paths for hundreds and touched the lives of thousands.

Duo Aglika Genova and Liuben Dimitrov's career was profoundly influenced by Loretta. Our next concert, on March 9, will be a showcase for their superb musicianship, proof of a life-long dedication to this artform. The music of Bach, Brahms and Shostakovich come alive with sensitivity and power. But they also include Shelly Berg's Martha and Mary Meditation: " A moody chorale opens the score which becomes increasingly jazzy and rhapsodic... it is filled with a knuckle-busting storm of repetitive notes. Berg could not have wished for a more dedicated performance, the duo's technical acumen matched by introspective musicality." (Lawrence Budmen about their Festival Miami performance in 2014; South Florida Classical Review)

A profound passion of Loretta Dranoff's was bringing music into the lives of young people. We have carried that legacy forward in the form of PianoSlam, a program whose mission it is to use music to enhance learning and communication skills, and to break down barriers by engaging the entire community into experiencing classical music and performing arts that culminates in a performance at the Arsht Center.

Last month PianoSlam 9 brought the community together in a powerful, thought provoking and energizing concert at the Arsht Center.

I look forward to see you on March 9 at the wonderful Coral Gables Congregational Church!

Warm regards,

Gabriele Fiorentino
President, Dranoff Board
