In this new year our organization aspires to grow your interest in our programs. I invite you to stay close, to come to more events and to bring more friends along. We want to serve you with high level musicianship and original, exciting programming, and we want to introduce you to new ways of experiencing our art form.
This Sunday, January 15th, please join us in welcoming back to Miami Dranoff competition laureates Duo Yoo & Kim in a concert at the New World Center in partnership with the Nu Deco Ensemble. The music you'll hear is an eclectic selection of composers: Zappa, Radiohead, Bach, Montgomery, Sixten and Reich, some written specifically for 2 pianos, some in arrangements. Seemingly incongruous elements are unified by a conceptual continuity that allow each of the partners to do what they do best. The concert begins at 7:30pm; VIP tickets include the pre-concert reception on the rooftop. It starts at 6:30pm. For tickets and more details, please see below.
Next month brings the culminating event of Piano Slam 9 at the Adrienne Arsht Center, our presenting partner. We work with the Miami Dade Public School System and have brought professional development workshops for the educators and writing workshops, poetry tutorials and 15 concert performances for the students in middle and high schools throughout the county.
More than 2,000 students wrote and submitted poems into this creative writing competition that uses students' love of music as a key way to help them increase their vocabulary and writing skills. In the past week, a select group reviewed all the poems to prepare the entries for the next step in this adjudication, which is a review by published poets. They will pick the approximately 70 poems to be presented to the critical eye of O Miami's founder, Scott Cunningham, who will choose the finalists whom you can see on stage on February 16 together with pianists Bobby Mitchell and Ashley Hribar, and DJ Brimstone 127 as well as the brilliant British poet Rodger Robinson. Stage direction by the award winning Teo Castellanos. Music direction by pianist/conductor Maarten Van Veen.
Don't miss this event. General seating tickets are free, but do consider supporting this great program with your purchase of VIP tickets that come with a bonus: a great after party on the plaza where you can dance, mingle and meet the artists. More information below.
I look forward to see you, and to have a conversation with you. Mostly, I look forward to experience the joy of sharing music and talent, together.
